The North Huon Warriors Stage 1 Junior sides played in their first local derby at Ranelagh on Monday
evening (pictured).
Captain Jack Batchelor lost the toss for the first-year Yellow team, and Black team captain Hugh Murray decided to send the opposition in to bat.
With the breeze helping a swinging ball, the Black team got off to a flyer, honing in on the stumps and taking five wickets in the first four overs.
A middle order fight back, led by debutant Joey Cartridge (14) was supported by Zach Darke (10), Alex Leaman (9) and Max Kull (9).
All the Yellow batters continued to improve as they faced some fast and accurate bowling from their more experienced club mates, and they only lost one wicket in the last 10 overs.
For the Black team, Jethro Penney kept very well in his first outing behind the stumps, while Lewis Thorpe (2-4), Oscar Bourne (2-6) and Jack Stevenson (2-8) finished with tidy figures, Yellow finishing with 8-65 off their 20 overs.
Sausages in bread kindly prepared by Denise and Tony were much appreciated during the break by kids and parents alike.
The Yellow bowlers started very well and shared a few early wickets, with the score at 3-10 after the fourth over.
Oscar (24) and AJ Terry (13) picked up the pace before Hugh Murray (24) cracked three fours in a row during his captain’s knock.
Xavier Coulson (14) finished off with Lewis (21) as the Black team went on to post a total of 4-119.
For the Yellow team, Joey and Alex both kept wickets, and both took 1-8 from their two overs!
Joey took a wonderful keeper’s catch off a fine edge.
Zach (1-13) and Lucas Raine (1-20) were the other wicket takers.
Player of the week for Yellow was Joey (pictured) with an all-round performance – batting, bowling, and keeping.
Oscar also did all three, and won the award for the Black team.
It was a milestone junior derby for the club, competitively played in fine spirit and with lots of laughter.
We can’t wait for the next one!
